Tom Holland has been labeled as one of the biggest actors of his generation, earning his role as Spider-Man back in 2016 to appear in Captain America: Civil War.
However, although he hit stardom during the trilogy of his Spider-Man series, Holland had already been in the limelight since his first film in 2012, The Impossible.
At 19 years old Holland managed to land what could be considered one of the biggest roles in cinema, Spider-Man.
Anthony Russo, Film maker and producer, shared how Holland was up against over 1,500 other actors applying for the role, including Dune‘s Timothee Chalamet.
Alongside his brother Joe Russo, the pair directed Captain America: Civil War, which introduced Holland’s version of Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and knew that Holland was perfect for the role.
However, he officially got the role through Director Jon Watts when casting for the film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Watts had nothing but praise for the Uncharted actor: “He just was so young and sweet, and just charming, and then in the audition, he did a full backflip, like a standing backflip, in addition to being really great on tape.”
“He was all the things that reminded me of what I loved about Peter Parker as a kid.”
Watts continued, “It was like watching a video of the real Peter Parker.”
Russo also commented, believing in Holland and praising him.
“And he was a movie star.”
“He had that movie-star quality.”
“The charisma, the confidence, the energy.”
However, the 28-year-old shared that he no longer has the flexibility he used to, expressing how his cousin asked him to do a back flip: “I actually did land it”.
“I pulled every muscle in my stomach.”
“For weeks, I couldn’t laugh because my stomach was so sore.”
