Boxing legend George Foreman dies aged 76

ByVinay Sharma

Boxing legend and Olympic gold medalist George Foreman has died at the age of 76.

The news was confirmed by his family on March 21 via Foreman’s official Instagram account.

The family wrote, “Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.”

Foreman, known worldwide as “Big George,” was celebrated both for his achievements in the boxing ring and his later success as a businessman.

Born in Houston, Texas, in 1949, Foreman overcame a tough upbringing in the city’s notorious Fifth Ward.

After dropping out of school at 15 and running into trouble, Foreman turned his life around by joining the Job Corps.

There, he earned his GED and picked up trade skills. It was also where he first discovered boxing.

Foreman said in a 2000 interview with Ringside Report, “I went into boxing at 17 to lose weight and become a great street fighter. Next thing I know, I was fighting as a Golden Glover.”

His boxing career took off quickly. At just 19, he won a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, proudly waving a small American flag after his victory.

He turned professional in 1969 and racked up an undefeated record in his early years. By 1971, with 32 wins and no losses, he became the top challenger to heavyweight champion Joe Frazier.

Beyond boxing, Foreman became a cultural icon thanks to the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide.

He was also a devout preacher, a family man, and a mentor to many.
