Although Disney’s Moana was first released in 2016, the excitement over the upcoming live-action and animated sequel is as big as ever.
Dwayne Johnson announced the live-action remake of the film back in 2023 during a Disney shareholders event, but fans are now finally seeing his return.
Johnson starred as the Demigod Maui, a shapeshifting trickster who helps Moana on her journey to return the heart of Te Fitti.
When it was first announced, the 52-year-old actor expressed his gratitude for returning to the character on X.

“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength,” he said.
He added: “I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”
In a recent viral TikTok video, fans finally got a chance to see the pro-wrestler adorning the tattoos of Maui.
Filmed in Hawaii, someone caught the actor in character on set with the boat from the original film.
With over five and a half million likes, fans were thrilled to have a first glimpse at the beloved film and character.
Some fans were beyond thrilled.
“Our kids aren’t excited. WE are excited. WE ARE THE KIDS,” one wrote.
“I’m so excited for Moana live action,” another added.
“If he doesn’t do your welcome I’m not watching it,” a third joked.
Although most comments were excited about the live-action, some thought the video spoiled the official reveal of Johnson’s live-action debut as the character.
“STOPPPP DONT SPOIL IT,” one said.
“WHYY DO WE NEED A LIVE ACTION MOANA FORRR,” another added.
“Bro u just spoiled it,” a third chimed in with.
“It’s so weird to see the rock with hair,” a fourth jokingly wrote.
