Ex-wife of Ariana Grande’s new boyfriend addresses public downfall of marriage she calls ‘saddest days of my life’

Ethan Slater, who is an American Broadway actor, recently starred in the musical movie adaptation of Wicked alongside singer-actress Ariana Grande where the pair first met.

Slater had confirmed he “fell in love” whilst filming although both were legally married to other people when the two began dating.

Lily Jay the ex-wife of Ethan Slater has opened up about the sudden public downfall of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart.

Lily, who is a clinical psychologist, wrote an essay for The Cut titled, “How Does My Divorce Make You Feel?”

“In the countless hours I spend rocking my son to sleep, pushing his stroller, marvelling at his sweaty little hands grasping a crayon, I work diligently on my private project of accepting the sudden public downfall of my marriage,” she wrote.

“This, I tell myself, is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide.”

Jay admitted she “confidently moved to another country” with their then 2-month-old son, to stay close to her now ex-husband whilst he filmed Wicked as he portrayed the character Boq.

She supported his career and admitted she “didn’t understand the growing distance” that was happening to the once loved-up family.

She added that she is focusing her time on motherhood as she learned motherhood “fills your time but not your mind.”

“Slowly but surely, I have come to believe that in the absence of the life I planned with my high-school sweetheart,”

“A lifetime of sweetness is waiting for me and my child.”

According to TMZ in July 2023, Grande and her ex-husband split in January 2023 with sources telling the outlet a few days later that Grande and Slater were romantically involved several months prior.

Six days after Slater was publicly linked to Grande, Jay filed for divorce which was then finalised in September 2024.

Jay added that no one ever marries someone with the thought of divorce happening.

“No one gets married thinking they’ll get divorced, in the same way, we don’t board a plane expecting to crash.”

“But I really never thought I would get divorced.”

“Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity.”

She continued, “In this season of shock and mourning, over a year after the end of my marriage was made public,”

“I deeply miss the life of invisibility I created for myself as a psychologist specializing in women’s mental health.”

“As for me, days with my son are sunny,” the psychologist also wrote on how the Wicked movie has affected her mental health.

“Days when I can’t escape the promotion of a movie associated with the saddest days of my life are darker,” she told The Cut.
