Disney and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones franchise may be shaping up for a full reboot.

While its last two instalments, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny, didn’t exactly go down well with fans of the original movies, the House of Mouse may not be ready to let go just yet.

Although no announcement has been made, a new report has sparked major speculation.

According to The DisInsider, a “full reboot of the franchise” may be in the planning stage at Disney and Lucasfilm as we speak.

In addition, the insider report suggests that a new Indiana Jones announcement could be set to happen at next year’s Disney D23 Expo event.

It’s no secret that Ford’s Indiana Jones is one of the most famous fictional movie characters to ever grace the screen, similar to James Bond, for example.

However, unlike Bond, only Ford has donned the lead role as Indy, besides the time the late River Phoenix took on the role for a flashback scene in the Last Crusade (which he did perfectly).

Although Indy and Ford typically go hand in hand, Disney and Lucasfilm could be planning to reboot the character into a new saga with a completely new lead star.

“Lucasfilm is letting the franchise rest for a bit before they do a full reboot of the franchise,” the DisInsider wrote in a recent report.

“I would expect the studio to announce something next year at the D23 Expo because even though the [Dial of Destiny] tanked at the box office, Indiana Jones is still an iconic IP and Disney/Lucasfilm do not want to waste that.”

They’re not wrong, at least in terms of it being an iconic IP.

It wouldn’t be overly surprising if the studio attempted to reboot the franchise; the only main question is whether or not Ford will be returning to play the role.

Stay tuned.
