Matthew Lillard may be considered a legendary Hollywood icon to many worldwide, however, he had doubts about how his career was doing before landing the role of William Afton.
Lillard’s no stranger to starring in a creepy horror, from playing one of two Ghostfaces in Wes Craven’s first Scream movie back in 1996 to fighting Thirteen Ghosts in 2001.
However, due to the time gap between his older high-profile flicks to now, the Scooby-Doo star was immensely grateful when Blumhouse came knocking with Five Nights at Freddy’s.
While talking with his Without a Paddle co-stars Seth Green and Dax Shepard on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Lillard opened up about his mindset in terms of his career.
“I think in my mindset, I’ve always been scrambling up a ladder with very little success,” Lillard said while discussing the topic of looking at yourself and your achievements in a negative light.
He continued to explain how despite his mindset and self-view of his career, when he looks back on his work, he realises how much he has achieved in terms of his acting profession.
“When I look back at my career – beyond my wildest dreams have I been successful, and [I’m] still working.”
The Scream star then went on to open up about working on Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s.
“Five Nights is the single biggest thing that ever happened in my life,” Lillard revealed.
“That movie, Five Nights at Freddy’s,” he added.
He continued: “It’s the biggest… So, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a [movie] that came out last year (…) It made 300 million dollars [on a 20 million dollar budget].”
When asked by Shepard if he believes Five Nights is his “biggest movie,” Lillard responded, “By far.”
