Netflix show that is ‘better Game of Thrones’ crowned as ‘one of the best in history’ by viewers

Netflix’s historical epic The Last Kingdom is earning high praise, with some calling it “one of the best series in history” and even comparing it to HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The series ran from 2015 to 2022 across five seasons and was followed by the 2023 spin-off film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. Adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, it explores the power struggles of 9th-century Anglo-Saxon England.

While House of the Dragon carries on the Game of Thrones legacy, some fans believe The Last Kingdom does a better job of capturing the original’s storytelling essence.

With each season delivering eight to ten gripping episodes, the show has been praised for its engaging plot and well-developed characters.

Netflix’s official synopsis for The Last Kingdom reads, “As Alfred the Great defends his kingdom from Norse invaders, Uhtred – born a Saxon but raised by Vikings – seeks to reclaim his ancestral birthright.”

The show boasts a talented cast, led by German actor Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, alongside Austrian actress Emily Cox, English actress Eliza Butterworth, and Lithuanian actor Arnas Fedaravičius, who later appeared in The White Lotus.

Set against the backdrop of Viking invasions, The Last Kingdom follows Uhtred as he wrestles with his dual identity, shifting loyalties, and quest for vengeance.

These elements have helped the series build a dedicated fanbase.

Social media is full of praise for the show. One fan on X urged others to watch.

He wrote, “I binged seasons 1-4 while sick this past week and finished season 5 in a day. This show slaps—give it a shot! Stick with it until at least episode three.”

Another one said, “Better than Game of Thrones, better story, much better ending. The Last Kingdom is the GOAT!”—complete with a string of goat emojis.

A different viewer applauded the ending, writing, “Loved the final season and finale. A superb story from start to finish.”Another fan wholeheartedly agreed. He wrote, “The final season was way better than Game of Thrones’ final season.”

“Well better than Game Of Thrones.”

“Don’t think there is a bad episode, let alone a bad season,” another one added.
