New R-rated Little Mermaid horror movie slammed by viewers as ‘worst movie of 2024’

ByAlex Duthie

Random horror movie fans have been eating good recently as yet another Disney classic has been adapted into an adult and R-rated flick, The Little Mermaid.

This new take, made a reality by Grindstone Entertainment Group, was slapped with an R-rating by the Classification and Rating Administration for language, some violence and brief nudity.

You can watch the trailer below.

As seen in the trailer, it’s not quite a shot-for-shot remake of Disney’s version.

This horror adaptation, which comes amid the ongoing popular trend of studios adapting classic childhood stories into gory R-rated slashers, has its own original take.

It follows recent viral and surprising horror flicks such as Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and the countless others that became financial successes.

How? They’re relatively cheap to produce, making it easier to make a profit.

Blood and Honey‘s 2024 sequel, for example, brought in over $7 million worldwide during its time, pulling in numbers at the box office.

Although this may seem short compared to Hollywood’s pricey superhero blockbusters, its budget was only around $1 million.

In this Little Mermaid adaptation, Mike Markoff plays Eric Prince alongside Lydia Helen, who plays Aurora Bey, aka the Little Mermaid.

The movie itself was released last December.

However, as per its listing on Rotten Tomatoes, audience members don’t seem to be thrilled with what they paid for.

“I could’ve done better camera work on my iPhone,” one wrote.

“The red lipstick on the gorgeous Lydia Helen, a toddler could’ve applied it straighter. Paying $6 on Amazon is borderline criminal.”

“What a dumb movie!” another added.

Emma Kiely at Collider went as far as to place this horror flick as being a strong candidate for being the “worst movie of 2024.”

Although it may be tough to find online depending on where you are, this Little Mermaid may appear across platforms such as Prime Video now and then.
