Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 13 years, soon to be one of the longest-running actors still in the universe with no signs of slowing down.
Sebastian Stan first auditioned for the role of Steve Rodgers, Captain America, however, was found to be more fitted for the grungy and darker role of the Winter Soldier.
The 42-year-old actor recently appeared at Comic-Con Liverpool, where he answered fan questions and promoted the upcoming Thunderbolts*.
A fan asked the Romanian-American actor which prequel films he would like to see the MCU explore, and he revealed that a Captain America prequel would be his choice.
“A prequel before Captain America: The First Avenger, so we could really like learn, maybe more about their [Bucky and Steve Rogers’] friendship. Their relationship, you know. I don’t know.”
However, Stan acknowledged that as far as Superhero movies go, there wouldn’t be much action in this proposed sequel since it would be before both characters had the super soldier serum.
So, instead, the actor suggested a prequel before his Winter Soldier debut to explore the character’s trauma and past in depth.
“Or we can even do a prequel to before Captain America: The Winter Soldier where we’re actually seeing what happened you know, with him.”
“We never really explore that.”
“We always see him towards the very end of his Winter Soldier Arc.”
“But when he had this other double life you know, where I don’t know, he taught like [Scarlett Johansson’s] Black Widow how to be Black Widow.”
“I mean it might be interesting to see, again if you guys are interested, we’ll see.”
Although Stan’s character has been a major part of the MCU, he has had little stand-alone time to dissect his past and the consequences of his time as The Winter Soldier.
One of the major plots of the MCU was the divide between Captain America and Iron Man, in which Steve Rodgers stood by Bucky while Tony Stark despised him for the death of his parents.
Stan’s upcoming project, Thunderbolts*, is about a group of misfits and supposed villains being recruited by the government to go on missions.
The film stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexi Shostakov, Wyatt Rusell as John Walker, and many more returning characters.
“Steve Rogers should come back,” Stan told the audience.
