Does he know something we don’t?!
Matthew Lillard has revealed that not only does he believe his Ghostface character Stu Macher is “alive” but he would also be very open to returning as the slasher icon in Scream 7.
Lillard shared his theory and interest in the franchise while making an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show alongside his fellow Scream star and host Drew Barrymore.
His entrance on the talk show was even in the theme of Ghostface himself.

After being introduced by the voice of Ghostface over the phone, which Barrymore was holding, Lillard went on to talk about Stu Macher and his long-awaited return.
“When we were making the first Scream, did you think at the time that, like, there would be a sequel?” Barrymore opened the conversation with Lillard.
“No,” Lillard responded.
“I mean, I don’t think anyone could have expected, back then, this kind of resurgence,” he added.
“I feel like the [Scream] franchise, now, is bigger than it’s ever been.”
When asked to theorise on the possibility of Barrymore’s character, Casey Becker, still being alive, Lillard shut down hopes by reminding everyone that she was a confirmed goner.
“She [was] hanging from a tree!” Lillard responded while laughing.
However, he continued to share that although Barrymore’s only chance to return would be as a ghost, his character Stu Macher is “definitely alive”.

“Listen, Stu is definitely alive,” Lillard shared.
In case you’re unaware, Lillard’s character in the first Scream movie was one of two original Ghostface slasher icons, who have inspired various characters to take their place in sequels.
“Right? I mean, my character Stu [Macher] is definitely alive, right?” he added assertively.
When asked to address the rumours that “he could come back”, which rose to new heights after a subtle tease of his character’s status was dropped in 2023’s Scream VI, Lillard agreed but did not confirm.
“Could we see Stu come back?” Lillard was asked.
“That would be fun, wouldn’t it?” he responded.
“I would love it.”
He continued: “Look, if it made sense, if it made sense for the franchise, if, you know, if Kevin Williamson (Scream 7 director) liked it then sure, obviously.”
“I’m very slutty,” he added while jokingly reaffirming his response.
